Our Does:
Our does are literally the life force of our farm. All of our does are excellent mothers that have excellent mothering instincts and are able to raise their kids without our assistance. In fact, the mothering instinct is so strong with most of our does that they have been known to steal kids from the other does.
All of our does have been tested and are CAE/CL free. Because we breed for muscling and overall correctness our does are able to thrive on just pasture alone once they have the kids weaned. They do so well on pasture, that many visitors to our farm ask us when the does are ready to kid. When we tell them that our girls aren't pregnant, they can't get over how big our girls are and ask us what we feed them to get them so big. I assure them that it is only pasture, except on really rainy days they do get some grass hay, but that's it.
During breeding and kidding season our does are fed a special grain blend that is made for us by Union Mills Feed Store. We also feed high quality grass and alfalfa hay. This last year, it was hard to find good alfalfa and the hay prices were so high. We got tired of watching the goats use the alfalfa as bedding, we knew we had to come up with a new feeding plan. This spring we switched to feeding alfalfa Chaffhaye and the goats LOVE it. No more alfalfa bedding for them lay on! We do still feed alfalfa hay to the babies, though.
